The Grande Chartreuse Monastery
A very special place, full of silence and calmness,
between nature and culture
- The musée de la Correrie shows you the remarkable history of the Carthusian order
- The Monastère de la Grande Chartreuse monastery is located along the bottom of the Grand Som, at an altitude of 850 m and 2 kms afoot since the museum
- About 25 monks live, still today, a life of silence and solitude in the monastery, which was founded almost 1000 years ago
- You can’t visit the place, but it is easily accessible, via a lane bordered by majestic beeches
- You can admire a part of the buildings inside the walls since the cross which is located in the meadow next to the monastery
- You can follow a footpath in the forest to return to the parking area, but you can also continue your walk and go to the Notre Dame de Casalibus and St Bruno chapels or the Col de la Ruchère, underneath the Petit Som
